The things that actually matter before you book

🏖️ Bali's south coast beaches aren't white sand

Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu — all volcanic grey-black sand. Beautiful in its own way, but not the postcard. For white sand you need Nusa Penida's Kelingking Beach, Padang Padang, or the Bukit Peninsula coves. This surprises a significant number of first-time visitors.

💰 Bali's tourist tax is mandatory since Feb 2024

IDR 150,000 (~$10 USD) per person on arrival. Pay online at lovebali.baliprov.go.id before you fly — airport queues are long. Only 35% of tourists currently comply but enforcement is increasing in 2026. It's not optional.

🚗 Bali has zero public transport

Getting around means renting a scooter ($5–10/day — risky if inexperienced), hiring a private driver ($35–60/day), or using Grab. A 10km drive in south Bali can take an hour in peak traffic. Thailand has Bangkok's world-class BTS Skytrain and cheap domestic flights.

✈️ Thailand flights are cheaper from most origins

From Europe: Bangkok/Phuket runs $500–900 return. Bali: $700–1,100. From the US East Coast the gap is even wider. Factor this in — it often negates Bali's lower ground costs for shorter trips under 10 days.

What you actually spend per day

All figures verified from BudgetYourTrip, recent traveller reports, and destination cost guides updated early 2026. These are realistic numbers — not best-case scenarios.

🇮🇩 Bali, Indonesia
$80
avg per day, mid-range traveller
Boutique hotel / private villa$50–90/night
Warung local meal$2–3.50
Restaurant meal (mid-range)$8–18
Scooter rental / day$5–8
Bintang beer$2–4
Entry tourist tax (one-time)$10
🇹🇭 Thailand
$65
avg per day, mid-range traveller
Guesthouse to 3-star hotel$35–80/night
Pad Thai (street stall)$1.50–3
Restaurant meal (mid-range)$5–12
BTS Skytrain / Grab$3–8
Chang / Leo beer$1–2
Tourist fee (arriving 2026)~$9

Bottom line: Thailand is 20–40% cheaper overall, especially for budget travellers. Bali closes the gap for couples staying in private pool villas ($30–60/night) — a category where Bali genuinely wins. Factor in flights from your origin: from Europe, Thailand is often $200–400 cheaper to reach, which changes the total trip cost equation entirely. Bali

Bali is not a country — it's one island within Indonesia, roughly the size of Delaware. What it lacks in size it makes up for in density of experience. Predominantly Hindu, it has a spiritual atmosphere found nowhere else in Southeast Asia. Canang sari flower offerings appear on every doorstep every morning. Temple ceremonies can shut down entire villages. This cultural depth is Bali's most underrated asset — and its most authentic experience.

Thailand

Thailand is not one destination — it's five or six, each completely different. Bangkok is one of the world's great cities: chaotic, brilliant, overwhelming. Chiang Mai is ancient and calm, surrounded by jungle temples. The Andaman coast has the turquoise water and white sand people picture when they imagine Southeast Asia. Thailand's key advantage over Bali is scale and infrastructure — you can fly Bangkok to Phuket for $30, and the BTS Skytrain is world-class.

This is where Thailand definitively beats Bali on beaches — the water is clearer, the sand whiter, the scenery more dramatic.

Who Should Go Where

🇮🇩 Choose Bali if…

You want a focused spiritual and cultural experience unlike anywhere else. You're travelling as a couple seeking romance, villas, and privacy. You prioritise yoga, wellness retreats, and rice terrace scenery. You want to surf — Bali's waves are world-class. You're a digital nomad — Canggu has Asia's best co-working infrastructure. You prefer one base over constant movement.

🇹🇭 Choose Thailand if…

You want genuine white-sand beaches and turquoise water. You're on a budget — Thailand is 20–40% cheaper overall. You want variety: city + mountains + islands in one trip. You're travelling solo and want to meet other travellers easily. You need reliable public transport. You love food — Thailand's street food is among the world's best at every price point.

🔄 Can you do both?

Yes — and it's one of the best itineraries in Asia. Bangkok to Bali takes around 5–6 hours with a connection via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, from around $80–150. Common approach: start in Thailand (Bangkok + Chiang Mai + islands = 10–12 days) then fly to Bali for a slower final week. The contrast is remarkable — many travellers say the combination is more satisfying than either alone.

📅 How long do you need?

Bali: 10–14 days is ideal — 2 days Ubud, 2 days Canggu, 1 day Nusa Penida, 2 days Uluwatu. Bali's compact size means you don't need long. Thailand: 2–3 weeks minimum to do Bangkok + north + islands properly. A rushed 7-day Thailand trip is possible but you'll spend too much time in transit. Both destinations reward slower exploration.
