Krabi vs Phuket
vs Phi Phi
Three destinations. One Andaman coast. A brutally honest breakdown of where your money actually goes — and which one matches your trip.
Phuket has the airport. Krabi has the cliffs. Phi Phi has Maya Bay. All three share the same Andaman coastline — and all three attract very different travellers. This guide cuts through the Instagram illusion with verified costs, real activity prices and a clear verdict for every type of trip.
Three islands, one coast, completely different experiences
Phuket is Thailand's largest island and most developed tourist destination. It has an international airport with direct flights from Europe, Australia and across Asia, proper infrastructure, hundreds of hotels at every price point, and the most diverse range of activities. It's also the most expensive of the three and the most crowded in peak season.
Krabi is what many people imagine when they think of Thailand — impossibly blue water, limestone cliffs rising vertically from the sea, long-tail boats weaving between hidden beaches. The reality matches the postcard, and it costs less than Phuket to experience it.
Koh Phi Phi is a small island that punches far above its weight visually. Maya Bay, made famous by The Beach, is genuinely one of the most beautiful places in Southeast Asia. But Phi Phi is logistically limited, expensive per day, and best visited as a day trip unless you specifically want the sunrise access or the island's social scene.
Krabi is what many people imagine when they think of Thailand — impossibly blue water, limestone cliffs rising vertically from the sea, long-tail boats weaving between hidden beaches. The reality matches the postcard, and it costs less than Phuket to experience it.
The main base is Ao Nang, a lively beach town with restaurants, shops and tour operators. From here, long-tail boats take you to surrounding islands and beaches. Railay Beach — only accessible by boat despite being on the mainland — is one of the most dramatic stretches of sand in Southeast Asia, enclosed entirely by sheer karst cliffs.

Four Islands Tour by Long-tail Boat
Classic Krabi day trip visiting Koh Poda, Chicken Island, Tup Island sandbar and Phra Nang Cave Beach. Full day with snorkelling and beach time. The sandbar connecting islands at low tide is one of the most photogenic moments in southern Thailand.

Rock Climbing at Railay Beach
Beginner to intermediate routes on the limestone cliffs above Phra Nang Beach. Small group, 4 hours, all equipment included. One of the best introductory climbing experiences in the world — with the Andaman Sea as your backdrop.

7 Islands Sunset Tour with BBQ Dinner
Full-day island tour ending with a sunset BBQ on the boat. Popular with couples and groups looking for a premium day on the water. The golden-hour light over the limestone karsts from a boat is genuinely hard to photograph well — but impossible to forget.
- Want dramatic natural scenery above everything else
- Are travelling on a budget or want better value than Phuket
- Want to try rock climbing or serious outdoor activities
- Prefer a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere
- Are a couple or small group of friends
- Want easy access to Phi Phi as a day trip
- Need direct international flights (Krabi airport is limited)
- Want vibrant nightlife every night
- Need a wide range of international dining options
- Are travelling as a large family needing full resort facilities
Phuket is Thailand's most visited destination and for good reason. It has the infrastructure, the beaches, the restaurants, the nightlife and the international connectivity that no other destination in southern Thailand can match. It's also the most developed, the most expensive and — in peak season — the most crowded.
The key to Phuket is knowing which area to base yourself in. Patong is for nightlife (Bangla Road is genuinely electric but also genuinely chaotic). Kata and Karon give you beautiful beaches with a calmer atmosphere. Kamala and Bang Tao are best for upmarket beach clubs and families.

Phang Nga Bay — James Bond Island
Dramatic limestone karsts, sea caves and the iconic rock formation from The Man with the Golden Gun. Full-day tour including sea canoeing through caves. The bay's emerald water against sheer limestone walls is one of the most cinematic landscapes in Thailand.

Big Buddha — Nakkerd Hill
A 45-metre marble statue visible from across the island, sitting atop Nakkerd Hill with panoramic views of the coastline. Note: the primary terrace is currently under restoration after a 2024 landslide — viewpoints along the road are still excellent. Free entry, dress code required.

Day Trip to Phi Phi Islands + Maya Bay
The most popular day trip from Phuket. Speedboat covers Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave and Bamboo Island. Includes hotel transfers, lunch and snorkelling. National park fee (THB 400) usually included. Book early — boats sell out in peak season.
- Want direct international flights from your home country
- Travel with family and need full resort facilities
- Want the widest range of activities and dining
- Are there for nightlife — Patong is unmatched in southern Thailand
- Want a Phi Phi or Phang Nga day trip with easy logistics
- Need the infrastructure of a large, well-developed destination
- Want dramatic natural scenery (Krabi wins this)
- Are on a tight budget (20–50% more expensive than Krabi)
- Want to avoid crowds and over-tourism
- Are looking for an authentic, unspoiled experience

Phi Phi is one of the most visually stunning places in Southeast Asia — a small island surrounded by impossibly clear turquoise water, with steep limestone cliffs and hidden beaches. It's also the most logistically limited and most expensive per day of the three destinations. Everything arrives by boat, which drives up the cost of food, accommodation and supplies.
The main question is whether to stay overnight or visit as a day trip. Most travellers do perfectly well as a day trip from either Krabi or Phuket. Staying overnight makes sense if you want early access to Maya Bay before the day-trip crowds arrive, or if you want to experience the island's social scene.

Maya Bay — The Beach from the Film
The iconic bay made famous by Leonardo DiCaprio's The Beach. White sand, turquoise water, limestone cliffs. No swimming, timed visits, capacity limits. Worth visiting — but manage expectations, it will be busy. The early morning light before 8am is the best time to arrive.

Full Day Phi Phi Island Tour from Krabi
Covers Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave, Monkey Beach and Bamboo Island. Speedboat, lunch and snorkelling included. Departs Ao Nang. The most efficient way to see all Phi Phi highlights without the expense of staying overnight on the island.

Sunrise Tour to Maya Bay from Phi Phi Don
If staying on the island, the major advantage is departing at 6am before day-trip crowds. The bay is genuinely peaceful in the early morning — a completely different experience to the midday rush. The only reason to pay Phi Phi's premium accommodation prices.
