Vietnam and Cambodia are not interchangeable. Vietnam is a long, diverse country — 1,650 km from north to south — with radically different regions, world-class food, and some of Asia's most spectacular landscapes. Cambodia is smaller, more focused, and home to one of the greatest archaeological sites on earth. Most travelers do both. But if you only have time for one, this guide tells you exactly which one to choose.
⚠️ Vietnam visa note: The e-visa now costs $25 and allows 90 days / multiple entry. Apply at least 3 business days before travel. Cambodia visa on arrival costs $30 — bring a passport photo and exact cash in USD.

Vietnam
From the chaotic energy of Hanoi to the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An to the beaches of Da Nang — Vietnam rewards travelers who go deep. The street food alone is worth the trip.
1,600 limestone islands rising from emerald water. A 2-day cruise includes meals, kayaking and cave exploration. One of Asia's most spectacular landscapes. Book mid-range or above — budget boats are overcrowded.
Book Halong Bay Cruise →
Limestone karsts over rice paddies, ancient capitals and boat rides through cave systems. 90 minutes from Hanoi. Far fewer tourists than Halong Bay and just as impressive. The most underrated day trip in Vietnam.
Book Ninh Binh Day Trip →
The best cooking class experience in Vietnam — local market visit, boat ride to herb gardens and cooking 5 traditional dishes with a local chef. Hoi An's Ancient Town is UNESCO Heritage and genuinely magical at night.

Cambodia
Cambodia is one of the most underrated destinations in Southeast Asia. Angkor Wat alone justifies the trip. But the country offers much more — floating villages, colonial Phnom Penh, and an honesty about its painful recent history that makes it deeply human.
The largest religious monument on earth. Sunrise over the main temple reflected in the moat is one of Asia's most iconic images. A small group guided tour covers Angkor Wat, Bayon and Ta Prohm in one day. Budget a minimum of 2–3 days for the full complex.
Book Angkor Wat Sunrise Tour →
Cambodia's most important historical sites. Choeung Ek and the former Khmer Rouge prison at Tuol Sleng (S-21). Deeply sobering and essential to understanding modern Cambodian history. Allow a full morning — this is not a quick visit.
Book Killing Fields Tour →
A village built entirely on stilts on Southeast Asia's largest lake. During the wet season (June–November) the entire village floats. A completely unique experience — real community life, not a tourist show.
Book Kampong Phluk Tour →
Real Daily Costs
Cambodia is slightly cheaper than Vietnam overall, but the difference is smaller than most travelers expect. Both are exceptional value for money.

When to Go
Both countries have distinct seasons that significantly affect your experience. Vietnam is more complex — weather varies dramatically by region.
Vietnam for variety and food. Cambodia for Angkor and history. Both for the complete Southeast Asia experience.
If you have 3 weeks, do both — fly Hanoi → Ho Chi Minh → Siem Reap → Phnom Penh as a logical circuit. If you have 10 days and it's your first time: Vietnam. If you have been to Vietnam already or Angkor Wat is your primary motivation: Cambodia. Both countries punch well above their weight for the price.

The best trip? Do both.
The Vietnam + Cambodia circuit is one of the classic Southeast Asia itineraries for good reason. Fly into Hanoi, travel south through Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh City, then catch a short flight to Siem Reap (from ~$60) for Angkor Wat before finishing in Phnom Penh. Three weeks, two countries, one of the best trips in Asia. Ho Chi Minh City to Siem Reap is also possible overland via the Moc Bai border crossing.
