Bali vs Lombok
vs Nusa Penida
Three islands. Three completely different experiences. One of them is right for your trip — this guide tells you exactly which one.
Bottom line: Nusa Penida is the cheapest of the three by far. Lombok is mid-range with Rinjani as the big cost spike. Bali has the widest range — you can spend €20/day in Ubud or €300/day in a Seminyak villa. All three are excellent value compared to anywhere in Europe or Southeast Asian cities.
Bali
Bali is the most complete travel destination in Southeast Asia. Ancient Hindu culture, world-class surf, rice terraces, volcanic peaks, and an international food and nightlife scene — all on one island. It's also the most developed, most crowded, and most expensive of the three. That's the trade-off.

Ubud Rice Terraces + Temple Tour
The Tegallalang rice terraces are Bali's most iconic image — UNESCO-listed subak irrigation system carved into hillsides over centuries. A full day from Ubud covers the terraces, Tirta Empul holy spring temple (where locals actually come to purify), the Sacred Monkey Forest, and a traditional Balinese dance performance at sunset. This is Bali's cultural core.

Uluwatu Temple + Kecak Fire Dance
Perched on a 70-metre cliff above the Indian Ocean, Uluwatu is Bali's most dramatic temple. The cliff bars below are legendary — Single Fin has one of the best sunset views on earth. The Kecak fire dance performed at the clifftop amphitheater at 6pm, with the ocean as backdrop, is one of the most spectacular cultural performances in Asia. Book in advance — it sells out.

Surf Lesson — Canggu or Kuta
Bali has some of the best beginner surf in the world — warm water, consistent waves, and instructors who have been teaching tourists for decades. Kuta Beach is the classic beginner spot; Canggu (Batu Bolong) is trendier with a better beach bar scene. Most beginners are standing on their boards within 2 hours. The sunset sessions here are genuinely unforgettable.

Lombok
Lombok is what Bali was 20 years ago — rawer, emptier, and completely undeveloped in most of the island. The beaches in the south (Kuta Lombok, Mawun, Mawi) are world-class and almost deserted. The Gili Islands — Trawangan, Meno, Air — are just offshore. And looming over everything is Mount Rinjani, Indonesia's second-highest volcano.

Gili Islands — Trawangan & Meno
Three small coral islands just off Lombok's northwest coast — no cars, no motorbikes, crystal-clear water over vibrant reef. Gili Trawangan is the party island (bars on the beach, nightly beach clubs). Gili Meno is for honeymooners — almost silent, the best snorkelling, sea turtles guaranteed. Gili Air is the middle ground. All three are 20–45 minutes by boat from Lombok.

Diving & Snorkelling — Lombok Strait
The Lombok Strait sits on the Wallace Line — a biogeographical boundary where Indo-Pacific and Asian marine ecosystems meet. This means extraordinary biodiversity: reef sharks, eagle rays, octopus, nudibranchs, and some of the healthiest coral in Indonesia. The water visibility regularly exceeds 20 metres. Both diving and snorkelling tours operate daily from Senggigi and the Gilis.

Mount Rinjani 2-Day Trek
Indonesia's second-highest volcano at 3,726m — one of the great trekking experiences in Southeast Asia. The 2-day/1-night route reaches the crater rim for sunrise views over a stunning caldera lake with a baby volcano rising from its centre. The descent to the hot springs is brutal and beautiful. This is a serious trek requiring reasonable fitness — and the views are among the best in Indonesia.

Nusa Penida
Nusa Penida is pure drama. The island sits 45 minutes by fast boat from Bali and has cliffs, viewpoints, and snorkelling that rival anywhere in the world. Infrastructure is basic — roads are rough, accommodation is simple — but that's exactly why it still feels raw and extraordinary. Most people visit as a day trip from Bali. Staying 1–2 nights lets you see it without the crowds.

Kelingking Beach Viewpoint
The T-Rex shaped cliff with a hidden white sand beach below is one of the most photographed viewpoints in Indonesia. The hike down to the beach is steep and takes 45–60 minutes each way — very few people make it, which means the beach itself is almost deserted. The view from the top is already extraordinary. Go early (before 8am) to avoid the day-trip crowds that arrive from Bali.

Manta Point — Swim with Giant Mantas
Manta Point is one of the world's most reliable manta ray cleaning stations — giant oceanic mantas up to 5 metres across come here daily to be cleaned by smaller fish. You snorkel (no scuba needed) directly above them in water so clear you can see every detail. The experience of floating above a manta ray in open ocean is unlike anything else in travel. This alone is worth the trip to Nusa Penida.

Crystal Bay + Angel's Billabong
Crystal Bay is Nusa Penida's most beautiful beach — white sand, turquoise water, and a small island offshore that looks painted. Snorkelling here is excellent; the reef starts just metres from shore. Angel's Billabong is a natural infinity pool carved into the cliff by the ocean — at low tide you can swim in water that appears to hang over the sea below. These two spots together make the perfect Nusa Penida afternoon.

You want the most complete experience — culture, surf, food, nightlife, and comfort. You're a first-time visitor to Indonesia. You want reliable infrastructure, great restaurants, and easy logistics. You have 5–10 days and want variety. Bali works for everyone from solo backpackers to families to digital nomads.
You want to escape Bali's crowds and find beaches that feel genuinely empty. You're a trekker who wants Rinjani. You're a diver who wants the Wallace Line biodiversity. You want Bali's beauty at 60% of the price. Lombok rewards travelers who want adventure over comfort and authenticity over Instagram.
You're already in Bali and want the most dramatic scenery in the region. You want to snorkel with manta rays. You want cliffs, viewpoints, and raw nature with minimal infrastructure. Most people visit as a day trip — staying 1–2 nights gives you the island almost to yourself after the day-trippers leave.
Standard route: Fly into Bali (3–4 days) → day trip or overnight to Nusa Penida → fast boat to Lombok (3–4 days including Gilis and Rinjani if fit) → fly home from Lombok or back to Bali. Total: 10–12 days. This is one of the best island-hopping routes in Asia and requires minimal planning once you're there.
